Putting the planet first
On our mission to create the most luxurious sustainable men’s underwear brand, we analysed over 20 different fabrics including organic cotton, hemp, bamboo, modal, and milk. With every fabric having their own unique production process we analysed a wide range of factors that directly impact the environment such as:
- How the raw materials are sourced – many brands use unsustainable farming methods, soil degradation, deforestation.
- The level of water consumption and pollution – the fashion and textiles industry are a major polluter of water with the UN estimating 80-90% of wastewater is returned to the environment untreated
- The textile chemical processing method – the different types of potentially harmful chemical processing treatments for dyeing, bleaching, softening etc.
- End of life prospects (how the garment is disposed) – landfill waste, 15 million tonnes of textile waste in the US alone
After a few years of review, experimentation, and testing, we chose Tencel Lyocell as the Hid’n…until it matters choice of fabric
Tencel Lyocell – a new standard for men’s underwear
Tencel Lyocell fabric is made from renewable raw material wood, created by photosynthesis. The wood pulp is transformed into cellulosic fibres through an environmentally responsible closed loop production process with high resource efficiency and low environmental impact – capturing and re-using 99.5% of water and solvents. The end product is certified as compostable and biodegradable and therefore can fully revert back to nature.
The closed loop production process is considered industry leading and far superior to general cotton underwear production – we use 40% less water and are 2x more colour resistant than cotton
